On which version were you able to reproduce this issue?
It should be fixed on intrepid and above btw (we merged from debian-multimedia):
acroread-debian-files (0.0.24) stable; urgency=high
* Update and enable ACRO_ENABLE_FONT_CONFIG in startup script.
