This bug is causing usplash to crap-out on shutdown and display a nice screen of vertical coloured lines, as reported in this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/301628
usplash shows the coloured lines at exactly the same time as the CIFS error messages are shown in shutdown.
