hi I have the same problem since apt cannot mark ubuntu-desktop for upgrade, I decided to remove it! :)
$ sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop $ sudo apt-get autoremove and then try to upgrade to jaunty. $ update-manager -d an error related to ubuntu-desktop happen... but, the upgrade still working and now, my intrepid is upgrading to jaunty!
