Update: from time to time, I can move the mouse a little, but I get no
cursor afterwards. In fact, if the supposed cursor is on something
clickable, it might even react to it. Occurs with the login screen and
within kde (gnome not yet installed)

I tried acpi=off as boot option, but that means noise and wasting energy
-  even now I think that also the cpufreqd is not running properly.
Anyway, that did not help.

It feels like a mouse polling (timing) problem now on ps/2 and a "HID
Device" issue on USB and a powernowd problem for the fan running all
time and the system probably at max. freq....

Please feel free to demand any more logs - but I might just exchange the
board and have a look what happens with a newer chipset than this 2year-
old one nforce 5 or 6 or whatever...

By the way, not sure if it was lenny's or jaunty's mini.iso installer -
something broke an unimportant lvm vgroup when trying to ext3 (or ext4
for jaunty) a seemingly unused reserve partition - sad. And the trigger
to go jaunty was that something breaks writing aids in OO 3.0.1 when
installing from the .ppa - ts...
