I don't have any idea why. All I can say is that I have a fairly clean 8.10 installation which I upgraded to Jaunty. In other words, the bug didn't arise under unusual circumstances. I watched the full upgrade process (but not the dist-upgrade process) and didn't notice any errors. Reproducing would involve re-installing 8.10 and re-upgrade-dist- upgrading to Jaunty.
