I realised that the usual way to install non packaged alsa drivers does
not work any more. So I wasn't testing 1.0.19.

I have used module-assistant to update to alsa-source  1.0.16-0ubuntu4.
That wasn't enough. Then I downloaded and installed alsa-utils
1.0.17-0ubuntu3. That did the trick and now mic works perfectly.

So I guess updating to Intrepid or Jaunty will fix this. So I close
this.
