The issue appears to occur when the  primary monitor doesn't provide EDID but 
the secondary does, and the secondary monitor specifications exceed what the 
primary can support.
It seems the xserver then tries to apply the secondary EDID values to the 
primary, and the screen is blanked since it can't support the request (I'd 
expect it to use default values - 800x600 - on monitors it didn't have 
specifications for).

What is strange is, I'd also assume the secondary monitor would light up
correctly but it blanks too.

A system can boot with both monitors operating in text mode without
"quiet splash" but as soon as the xserver starts and switches modes the
screens go blank.

Hopefully the original reporter can add the required information for
their system. I can reproduce it on a Vaio SRX51 which I'll add to my
ToDo list.
