Serial console debugging is a good way. You can also try to run X from
gdb over ssh and see if you get some hints where it freezes, then look
at the code and add breakpoints and try to narrow it down. But it can be
difficult, since the bug might have to do with hardware state, since it
works on the first run after boot.

I hope to hear from Mark from the upstream report in bug #340750. Maybe
this is also due to some bad memory management.
