Ok. You said you installed from source. Did you install an initscript? If you install from source you have to do this yourself. The README file has some information on this, but admittedly it is not in the right place and not clear:
Distributions ------------- While it certainly ok to use /usr/share/ufw/ufw-init as the initscript for ufw, this script is meant to be used by ufw itself, and therefore not particularly user friendly.
