No, the original .POT is not ok.
It should be using msgid_plural
msgid untranslated-string-singular
msgid_plural untranslated-string-plural

In the English singular case, the number – always 1 – can be replaced

This works because the ‘printf’ function discards excess arguments that
are not consumed by the format string.

You could replace it with the translation version of „one” ... but you
have to check if rosetta allows it :)
