I personally don't think an Instant Messaging program would be a correct
fit for messages relating to system updates. Not all users have an IM
running all the time, and if the solution would then be to create a
lightweight message notifier, we are just re-inventing the update-
notifier wheel.

The solution in Jaunty seems to very closely model the OS X method for
update notification, which is one I feel is very inelegant and clunky.

Mark said previously that users feel like the notification area is a
swamp, and I agree. Very few programs have a need to be there. However,
I honestly feel like update-notifier is one that should remain there,
and if it is unrecognisable by new users, then that should be worked on
separately.
