i think i figured it out: 
suspend fails when a SD card is inserted and mounted. 
this also explains why suspend never failed on the first try - the SD card gets 
mounted on resume and so the second suspend fails. this is reproducable for me. 
the SD card is formatted with ext3, it's a 16GB "extrememeory" SDHC card.

i tried to format the SD card with XFS as suggested at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L#Card%20Readers but
suspend also fails with the XFS formatted card mounted.

i guess a solution would be to unmount the card when suspend is
triggered? any clue how to do this?
