I get a similar error that stops me from booting 2.6.20.X I can get it to boot into rescue mode. It will hang on boot, i hit ALT_CTRL_DEL just once, and it breaks out of some startup script, complains about file systems not existing then drops to shell.
/ is mounted ro, so i remount with rw but i don't have my /usr or /var that are on separate partitions so all i did was run dmesg and reboot back to my old 2.6.17 working kernel. Here's the dmesg (attached). Looks like modprobe causes an kernel Oops somewhere in startup.
