It is a fresh install. Only complication is I have a separate home partition, so that has configuration stuff from previous installs. > Is this symptom reproducible if you do the following? > > killall pulseaudio && pulseaudio -vvv Interesting -- killall pulseaudio did nothing, so it appears the problem is that the pulseaudio process is going awol. pulseaudio -vvv solves the problem -- so it seems the error message I was getting makes some sense, it could not connect to pulseaudio because it wasn't there ;) Thanks for asking the questions. I'll keep an eye open for what point pulse goes awol now and keep you posted (as before, my suspicion is that suspend is causing the problem).
