Thanks, Pedro, for your suggestion. I have tried installing xubuntu- desktop upon my actual ubuntu, and the freezes still happen. I'll try a fresh install. I'm thinking of trying the 64 bit edition too.
Sometimes, when I have to reboot I am experiencing some weird behavior: Sometimes the system does not detect the integrated soundcard, sometimes it does not detect my IDE hard drive (I have the operating system in a SATA disk).
