I am getting a white screen after shurdown too. But a very weird one - the screen starts to darken in some areas, as if it is catching rot, really it's frustrating. I've tried poking the screen to see if it is connected to some physical external stimulii, but it's not. It's really strange. I've been having this since 8.10 sometimes and now on Jaunty it's on every shutdown. I'm using an Asus X57Vm, C2D 2Ghz and a nVidia GeForce 9650m GT with 1Gb VRAM. (that's 64bit of course). I'll try renaming the usplash_down script, see if it does the trick, otherwise i have to hold the power button to shut down.
