I've got similar issue with a fresh install of Edgy 2.6.17-10-generic kernel: * booting is really slow (2-3 minutes) and seems to hang a while on mounting root file system * gnome (animations) are really choppy when I start heavy applications (like openoffice or wesnoth,...)
Then I install 2.6.17-10-i386 kernel: * everything is fine!
