Actually, I was in error regarding the resolution. I used the wrong
procedure for getting a modified xorg.conf to work.

Editing the xorg.conf file, logging out, then logging back in sets the
resolution to 1024x768 (see also bug 255561, with the same monitor but a
different computer and display card).

So this is solved, but of course a tool for modifying xorg.conf would be
very useful.
