i attempted to create a flash installer manually by:
installing syslinux on a new fat32 partition on the disk
copying the contents of the iso to the flash disk
moving isolinux to syslinux and isolinux/isolinux.cfg to syslinux/syslinux.cfg

the disk boots fine but again drops me into busybox after some unspecified
failure. this time, however, dmesg reveals a number of messages like so:
isofs: changing to secondary root
kjournald starting. commmit interval 5 seconds
ext3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
iso 9660 extensions: microsoft joliet level 1

and this just loops around like that for awhile (> scrollback buffer).
i'm not sure where the ext3 filesystem is coming from unless the
installer is failing to do something with a partition already on the
disk of the target system?
