** Description changed:

This is actually a followup from '[Bug 329556] Re: Intrepid Nvidia
driver setup, not working‏'. As previously reported, I had tried
installing 180 with no joy previously and reverted to installing from
EnvyNG which recommends 173. So today, I gave it another whirl with the
same frustration occuring with 180.29 not installing. Looking around the
system I did notice that the 'libglx.so.xserver-xorg-core' doesn't
appear to be linked to anything ( it's not in /usr/lib/nvidia ), so this
may be related to Bug #281259.

Attached is a compilation of outputs from:
  1) lsbrelease - sys version
  2) lspci -vvnn - shows nvidia card 8800 GT at PCI:1:0.0
  3) Xorg.0.log - today's version after downloading/installing nvidia-glx-180
with Synaptic Package Manager
error reported = (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension
(Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
  4) Xorg.0.log - from last X restart - same error
  5) xorg.conf - as configured by nvidia-xconfig

My displays are still not being detected correctly, so I'm running at
1280x1024 rather than 1600x1050.
usplash was still attempting to initialize at 1158x864, so I updated grub to
disable the splash, but that didn't help.

Please don't forget me. I'm not about to DL Studio again until this gets
straightened out though I'd really like to try and make some progress
getting the audio & midi setup.

  Thanks
