This is the same thing that happened to me. New 1.5 TB SATA ASUS P6T MB intel i7-920 new 9.04 install same error message.
I reinstalled with the alternate CD, same error message, then was able to install lilo (its the next option that comes up after grub fails). The common thread seems to be the 1.5 TB SATA disk.
