I just wanted to log in to say that this is keeping me from using Ubuntu
on my laptop. I wouldn't inflict that hideously-irritating sound on
anybody within (the substantial) hearing range of my laptop when, for
example, using it on a train or bus. I'm extremely disappointed that
this wasn't fixed before release.

In addition to it occurring at shutdown, it seems to occur in places
where the normal system beep should-- for example, when you search a
Firefox webpage for text and the text isn't found.

The computer is a HP Pavilion tx1000 convertible tablet. Like posters
above, I don't have a "PC Beep" entry in the mixer.
