Just to be on the save side ... run the attached script to make sure no "stale" remains of awn are still on your fathers sytem. After that do:
DEBUG=1 ./notify-osd >/tmp/debug.log ... in a terminal. Then issue the command: sudo apt-get install libnotify-bin notify-send "Testing" "This is a test" -i totem sudo dpkg --purge libnotify-bin ... in another terminal. You should see a notify-osd rendered notification-bubble in the top right of the screen.
