A couple weeks after posting that I reinstalled and it hasn't happened again.  
I have not played around with experimental AWN stuff again yet, which I think 
had something to do with it.  I never put a whole lot of effort into fixing it 
because I had been planning on doing a reinstall anyway.  As far as trying to 
reproduce it in 9.04 I don't think I can help you out there as I am still using 
8.04 and plan on staying there until the next LTS release.  Sorry I can't be of 
any further help.
