jcornwall was right:  the problem is related to my internal wifi card,
i.e. Atheros AR928X, using the ath9k driver.  It turns out that the
somewhat new ath9k driver provided out of the box with Jaunty can't play
nice with avahi.

There's a simple solution however, i.e. upgrading the ath9k driver, by
installing the backport module:

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty

then reboot

So clearly, this is not an avahi or Rhythmbox problem.
