ok here is more info. when trying to shut down you get 4 system beeps and you get caught up on the system halt message. However i did clean install of jaunty same hard disk same PC did not do updates.
linux-generic= 2.6.28-11.14 linux-image-generic= 2.6.28-11.14 It shuts down fine. I tested this incase it was bios but i think the newest kernel and the bios are not playing well with each other. My gut tells me all of the "system halt" messages like i get are all the same. he numbers change but nothing else. I have A04 bios on a dell optiplex, you might want to find out from others what they have.
