In case anyone is having the same problem as I am, here's what worked for me:
sudo /usr/share/b43-fwcutter/install_bcm43xx_firmware.sh After running the above command and restarting my system my wireless was working perfectly. Note that this solution is specific to installing the b43 driver for bcm43xx wireless cards and not necessarily relevant to the original post.
