I just did a little bit of testing and think this may be related to
kernel version and also perhaps to 32-bit vs 64-bit architecture (or of
support thereof), however the latter theory is unsubstantiated.
This is still an issue for both i386 and x64 bit Jaunty, the final
release, using kernel 2.6.28
It isn't, however, an issue for x64 bit (and, I assume, i386) editions
of Ubuntu 8.10 ("Intrepid") using kernel 2.6.27.
FYI, OpenSUSE 11.1 i386 also works fine (but x64 doesn't) also using
kernel 2.6.27.
Hope this is useful (I suppose this bug is filed as a kernel bug, but
nonetheless...).
