something similar happend to me: after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 i could not suspend/hibernate anymore (some kind of logout happend - after login network was disabled). But I had '2.6.28-12-server' enabled. After switching to 2.6.28-12-generic i can suspend correctly and the restart works also.
