In my case, the installation halted from time to time, indicating that
some part of the installation crashed.  Sometimes I tried using apt-get
to continue the update, and finally I clicked on the orange install-
error icon to finish.

I started the upgrade by mounting the ISO image for the alternate 9.10
install CD. When I started the installation, I specified NOT to obtain
files from the Internet. On finishing that phase, I proceeded to upgrade
using apt-get. I made no changes to sources.list other than commenting
out the line for the CD at that point.
