Correction, that should have been "Network Connections" not "Network Manager" sorry for the confusion it may have caused anyone. Anyway, after pasting the above notes I look at the tray icon (blue bars) left click it and see my SSID there with a strong signal.
Click it, I'm prompted for my WPA2 password, I enter it and the balls turn green and it connects in seconds!
