I have tested with the same PDF file (downloaded from http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/) with an HP printer using the pxlmono driver (as your HP LaserJet 1300 does by default) and choosing the printer and A4 portrait in the "Print Setup", as you did. I have done this once with a print queue on an Intrepid machine and on a Jaunty machine (all updates installed). In both cases the printout comes out correctly for me on A4 paper. Are you actually using A4 paper? When I compare my printout with your photo it looks like that your paper is Letter-sized.
