The lack of dmidecode is very, very strange. The following packages are
all dependent on the dmidecode package in Edgy:

    ubuntu-standard

    laptop-detect

    hotkey-setup

    acpi-support

    education-common (Feisty removes this)

I guess I'm puzzled by how one can get Edgy on a laptop without these
installed... ...unless you installed an Ubuntu other than desktop
Ubuntu? (Even my Dapper server install includes dmidecode.)

If at all possible*, it may be worthwhile for you to install Edgy from
the CD, overwriting your current Ubuntu.

* "at all possible" means at least all of the the following are true, if
not more:

you have separate / and /home partitions, or you easily backup and
restore /home after the install,

you have made minimal or zero changes to / yourself (including to /etc,
etc.) OR you can manage remaking those changes on a fresh install, and

when you do restore anything after the re-install, you make as few
changes to / as possible - preferably none, at least not before
retesting this behavior.
