Then a little history on this laptop:

Started life as a triple-boot yellowdog linux, ubuntu Hoary and macosx 10.3.9.
Upgraded Hoary to Dapper by hand-editing /etc/apt/sources.list
Upgraded to Edgy the same way. The transition failed (hplip problems) and thus
I went throught two or three steps of sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
Then I removed ubuntu-desktop to be able to uninstall some apps like evolution
without being reinstalled every time I dist-upgrade.

Which brings me to today.

My root and home partitions are separate, and the former yellow dog root
partition is being used as plain file storage nowadays (ubuntu does a
much better job, YDL is for servers and desktops and it shows).

I have a FreeBSD to which I regularly rsync my home partition, so that's
no problem. I will copy my /etc folder to save the configurations I have
in there, and I will reinstall edgy from a CD.

Then I'll test and report. Will happen this weekend.
