attached image demonstrates the problem.

The fonts do not show up in xlsfonts that I can see, but in the
screenshot, you can see that they appear in the font dialog -- and i
must repeat: they worked just fine before the upgrade to jaunty.

Is there a map of the font software used in the desktop? There's several
kinds of fonts here, and I'm going to assume they don't all follow the
same path from file to screen?

could it be something as stupid as permissions in /usr/share/fonts ?
