Given the lack of response, I'm assuming this problem is very hardware specific.
FWIW, the system is a HP Pavilion a730n (desktop, stock hardware with all firmware updates). The system id is 7cb3dd11aee4db9554a5a15bbc6c847b in the launchpad hardware database (there are 2 with that id now, but it's the one named hp-a730n). I'd be happy to look into this more if anyone has any ideas where to start. The only thing that immediately comes to mind is to try the latest vanilla kernel and see if it behaves any differently.
