So it seems that xorg is indeed alive, just not showing the output to
the screen. It would be interesting to know if it's also responding to
your (blind) input. You could test this by keep typing if you're in an
application where you type, or setup a keyboard shortcut to a terminal
and then run something like `touch I_am_alive` to see if it's actually
making that file.

Could it be that your backlight simply goes off and that everything else
is working? You will probably notice if the backlight is on even if the
screen is black if you turn off the light in the room. (On second
thought, this would be strange, since you can switch to a VT just fine.)
