I have encountered this same problem and I have found that it was only occurring when one attempts to select (activate, download) a new driver but an internet connection was not present. I had just got the OS installed and hadn't got the wifi working yet. The app makes a brief attempt to contact a server, then fails and pops up a blank error dialog. I tried rebooting and everything with no luck. Then when I fixed the wifi the program magically started working.
