A couple of new observations:

* I was unable to connect to the network 'tmobile' a couple days ago.
Attempting to do it would pop a dialog saying that a password or key was
required. There was a dropdown on it whose only option was "None". The
connect button on the dialog was grayed out and the only option
available was Cancel. I went into "Edit Connections" and deleted the
entry for "tmobile" there. After that I was able to connect normally.
Note that the AP had no encryption.

* Based on this observation, I went back to "Edit Connections" and
deleted a bunch of old (up to 2 years) entries there. After that, the
bug I reported here disappeared!

Question: could these symptoms be caused by a change in the format in
which the entries for previous connections are is stored?
