This sounds like a specific hardware related issue, rather than a 'paper
cut'.
A 'paper cut' is a usability issue likely to effect an average user the
first day s/he tries Ubuntu.
Could you please post the graphics hardware you have, the version of
Ubuntu you are using, and a screenshot of the problem. Thank you!

file dialogs don't appear to do anything (can open a folder and choose a file
(if you know exactly where it is), but it doesn't show up)
