I see the same behavior on my Dell Latitude E6400 (with Intel graphics). When booting kernel 2.6.31-1 normally, the screen stays black. The system however comes up, as I am able to log in remotely via ssh. When booting with the nomodeset parameter (KMS disabled) everything works fine.
