I should have pointed out that the screen freezes up with a still image from the "cyclone" screensaver.
Also, although I know it runs counter to everyone's GNOME instincts, and that screensaver is a minor and nowadays completely cosmetic feature, this is a perfect example of why giving people more options works: whether or not this item were functioning properly, I should have the option to disable it at will.
