I have now updated pidgin/libpurple to 2.5.8 using the instructions
here: http://pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/

The problem is still there. Again, moving/deleting the libxmpp.so file
"solved" the issue.

Help->About confirmed pidgin and libpurple has been updated to 2.5.8.
