As a late report, I was unable to again get this drive running under more recent releases, so I shoved it in a non-Linux machine, where it whirrs happily. I replaced the drive with a Lite-on, and Ubuntu handles all reading and writing processes with no problem. I have not tried the Sony drive with the upstream kernel--maybe this is our solution (I won't be able to test this for a while.) Perhaps a USB drive enclosure would also solve the problem--any takers?
