Hmm, screen resolution and video resolution are two different things.
Even with a 22 inch monitor you can have a video resolution of 800x600
and fill the whole screen. It would seem to me that it is estimating
your monitor size to be much bigger than it actually is.
Are you using a live cd or a text based install? What is it listing your
monitor as in the Xorg.conf, and have you tried adjusting the size
settings on it aswell?
