I have a guess as to what caused this... When I upgraded to Karmic, I think it got rid of my user's password. I went to the users and groups config, and tried to set it to what it was before, and it wouldn't let me, because it was too short. I changed it to a longer one, I'll see if this changes the behavior or not.
