I agree with your sentiments in general, but the decision to "clobber"
the file was taken after considering that checkbox is still a niche
application (even though it is installed by default) and no users would
have modified their /etc files for checkbox.
There have been no bugs filed (besides this one) as a direct result of
our chosen solution.
We will try to find a more acceptable solution in the future.
