I was able to print a test page between 2 failed pages from the PDF. I
was trying to determine if the printer was jammed. The printer has a
diagnostic display and when Ubuntu sends a print job the display shows
the job number, user name and as many characters of the document name
that will fit. This tells me at least part of the job is getting there.
There are no errors reported by Document Viewer or Ubuntu during one of
these failures the printer simply doesn't print.

When I think about it the problem may be due to age. The Laserjet 4+ is
an old printer with an old version of Post Script. What I thought was
unusual is the Post Script module. When I went looking for a PS
cartridge (it has a slot for font cartridges) I was surprised to find
that it was a memory module. I had to take out one of the SIMM RAM
chips to put in the PS module. Unfortunately the printer's diagnostic
page doesn't report the PS version only its part number 19931105.

I got the thing working this morning by switching the driver to the
Laserjet Foomatic driver instead of the PS driver. Disappointing :(
