Which distribution do you have installed? Jaunty? Karmic? Ubuntu? Kubuntu? Is any of the programs kdesu, kdesudo, gnomesu, or gksu installed on your system? Is any other program for this purpose (opening a login/password dialog and running a program as the user who logged in or as root) installed on your system (which program)?
Did you start hp-plugin as a privileged user (first user set up during installation, must be in adm and lpadmin groups)?
