I'm sure that doesn't answer your question, but I am not yet well versed in KDE or Linux systems navigation. This is a unmodified install of Kubuntu to an old Athlon 2600/32bit machine and 2.5 gigs of ram. *"Did you start hp-plugin as a privileged user (first user set up during installation, must be in adm and lpadmin groups)?"* I do recall that the install process found the printer. *"Can you make sure that your system is completely up to date?"* outside of the following the usual update via the update manager and for good measure "marking all updates" in Synaptics this would be a YES to my knowledge. I would like to say that it was working for a short time and then stopped and on my laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 and plugged my printer to it and it worked for a few printouts and also now give the "completed" but nothing happens.
